“I thoroughly enjoyed my experience working with the Latino Canadian Community. Jaime Martinez, the executive director, was fantastic to work with. It was very touching to speak with members of LCC and hear their stories. I am grateful for their openness and willingness to give us insight into their culture. I think the work the organization does is amazing and I wish it the best of luck in the future.”Rita RahmatiInternational Conflict Management Student at Western
“Working alongside the Latino Canadian Community and executive director Jaime Martinez for a Community Engaged Learning project with Western University has been a wonderful learning experience. While working on a report for the LCC, I was able to witness an organization that displays incredible professionalism and dedication in not only providing support for Latino immigrants in London, Ontario but also through their relationship with other organizations like Western University. Although my CEL group was given plenty of freedom in creating our report, the LCC supported us throughout every stage and made the process feel like a natural collaboration. In addition, working closely with members of the Latino community was an extremely memorable experience. Their willingness to participate and share their stories with us was inspiring. Overall, working with the LCC reinvigorated a long forgotten optimism in myself. I look forward to see the progress the LCC can make in the London area.”Rachel CaveInternational Conflict Management Student at Western
Thank you so much for this great opportunity to learn about cultural differences, Canadian hospitality, grass-root integration mechanisms, politics of immigration, the suffering caused by discrimination, and the struggle of adapting to the Canadian winter from a whole new perspective! This project allowed me to evaluate Canadian immigration politics (and the very current topic of Bill C-24) on a local, even individual level, which is an extremely valuable experience for every Political Science student. It is wonderful to hear that immigration policies might change for the better soon and may increase the quality of life of many immigrants. I wish all members of the Latino Canadian Community, especially those I had the pleasure to talk to, all the best!Imke Steimann (from Germany)International Conflict Management Student at Western
Working alongside the Latino Canadian Community has allowed me to develop a better understanding and appreciation of the obstacles that Canadian-Latino’s face when seeking employment, and when engaging in the work force. In turn, I feel like I have developed a greater sensitivity towards the struggles that immigrants face when trying to settle down in Canada. Before, I had heard second-hand what it was like to be an immigrant, but I never truly understand the stress and frustration that comes with immigration until I worked with the Latino Canadian Community. I am thankful for being able to have the opportunity because I will now bring this new facet of cross-cultural sensitivity with me on my future endeavours.
Furthermore, by having the opportunity to conduct research with the London Canadian Community, I have a better understanding of my academic interests, which I believe will help me decide what to pursue after my undergraduate studies.
Thank you for this wonderful opportunity Jaime!
All the best!Sydney Patton ReisInternational Law Student at Western
